I never thought that I would have to go online to find dates. I was under the impression that online dating was for the socially challenged and geeky kind of people. I worked in advertising and surely if I had those traits, I would be given the pink slip.

I was having a hard time getting dates because of my erratic working hours and I didn’t want to date a guy in the same profession. I didn’t want to compete with my boyfriend about which account I got at the end of the day. I had enough competition at work, and certainly I didn’t want one in bed.

One weekend, I went to catch up with some old buddies from college and felt really left out because everyone had a better half except sexy me. Then after a lot of contemplation, I thought- why not. I won’t tell anyone fearing the stigma of being called a desperate woman and loser.

I surfed to one of the leading online dating website and created an id. I searched through their database and generally left messages for some guys. Actually I wasn’t sure what I was looking for.

Responses came pouring in the following day and yes, I was excited. I had put my photograph on the site but it was a veiled one. The only thing appealing in that picture was my bright, cherry red lipstick. I wanted to remain mysterious and avoid being recognised by friends, if any of them lingered there.

I spoke to a couple of men on instant messaging and met up with a few of them. This helped because it made me realise what kind of men were available, what I was really looking for in a man and the type of relationship I wanted.

A guy caught my attention on one of my dates and he had asked me-“You are not the kind of person who would resort to online dating, would you?”

At that moment, I just smiled. I didn’t want to show to him my self-opinionated attitude. But I had a feeling that this guy was the one. He really could see the real me beneath all the glamour and confidence. I met with him a couple of times over drinks and then he invited me to meet his parents. I was stunned. He knew I was ready and the meeting went so smoothly like I had already met them somewhere before.

In a month’s time, we were married. I never thought my life would be so well organized. Wedding plans went smooth, everyone was happy and I felt blessed.
